Transaction processing is a technique in processing transactions - in random order. It is a real-time processing. Real-time processing means that a transaction is processed fast enough for the result to come back and be acted upon right away. For processing to be real-time it must also be online - that is, the terminals must be connected directly to the computer. Transaction processing systems use disk storage because the disk drive can move directly to the desired record.
